You shouldn't need a second job to understand your own money.
You earn money. You spend money. You pay the bills. And somehow, at the end of the month, you're still wondering: where did it all go?
You've probably tried to get organised before. A budgeting app. A spreadsheet. A promise to track every expense. And for a while, it worked. Until life got busy.
The groceries, subscriptions, weekend plans, bills and unexpected purchases kept happening, even when you stopped keeping track. Or maybe you never started, because who has time to record every coffee, supermarket run and online order?
Here's the thing: you don't need to track your spending by hand. Your bank already does that. And tracking alone doesn't explain anything. One household tracked every dollar for four months and still missed about $150 a month: groceries built from $40–60 trips several times a week, $89 of subscriptions, a gym nobody used. All of it tracked. None of it noticed.
What you need is a way to turn those transactions into answers.
The case was shared on r/SavingMoney and reported by Benzinga / Yahoo Finance, 30 January 2026.
Sound familiar?
I've heard all of these complaints… so I built The Family Close
I don't want to track my spending by hand every day.
Paste your bank export once a month. About twenty minutes, then you're done until next month. My app tracks one account, but we have a current account, a joint account and a credit card.
Paste each export into the same file, up to 20 accounts. Money moved between your own accounts doesn't count as spending.I use a tracker and still don't know what to change.
A category is flagged only if it's off by more than €75 and more than 10%. Thirteen categories become the three or four worth looking at.My app keeps disconnecting or putting things in the wrong category.
Nothing connects to your bank. Rules you can see and change sort every transaction, and a check on the Close shows anything still unsorted. We're over budget again. I feel like I failed.
Over on a line five months out of six? Then the plan is wrong, not you. The Analysis tab tells you which plan line to change.Groceries went up and I don't know why.
The Bridge splits it: did you shop more often, or pay more each time? The two need opposite fixes, and it tells you which one it is.Small bills keep creeping up and I never notice.
It lists every recurring bill that costs more than six months ago, and what that adds up to per year.I'm not paying another monthly subscription.
You pay once and the file is yours. Nothing to cancel.
Your new monthly money routine
From hundreds of transactions to one clear picture.
- Export your transactions. Download last month from your banking app as CSV or Excel and paste it in. Bring together up to 20 accounts (who has only one, right?) so the whole household is in one place.
- Let the spreadsheet sort them. Rules you can see and change put each transaction in a category. A starter set is included, and anything it doesn't recognise is marked so you can add a rule once.
- See where your money went. Spending by category and by month. How much went to groceries? Housing? Transport? All those small purchases that add up?
- See what changed, and why. This is where most trackers stop and The Family Close starts. It shows which categories actually moved, whether that's a one-off or a new normal, and where it's worth looking.

The method
Three moves, once a month
Companies don't check the balance and hope. They close the month. The Family Close translates that routine into three moves a household can run on its own bank export.
- What deserves your attention. A difference counts only if it's big in euros and in percent. In the sample family's month, that turns thirteen categories into four. The skill is knowing what to ignore.
- Why it moved. It splits a change into "you paid more each time" and "you bought more often", exactly, with nothing left over. Those two need opposite fixes, and most people pick the wrong one.
- What it means next. A rolling forecast, and how many months the essentials would be covered if one income stopped.
The Analysis tab
Ten questions, answered from one bank export.
Each one writes you a sentence, not just a number.
What if checking your finances took twenty minutes instead of an afternoon?
Imagine sitting down with a coffee, opening one spreadsheet and seeing:
- how much you've spent in each category
- how this month compares with the last few
- which expenses take more of your money than you realised
- the three or four places worth a closer look
Not because you recorded every purchase for weeks. Because you brought the data you already have into one place.
Less time collecting numbers. More time understanding them.
About ten minutes to set up, once. After that, around twenty minutes a month.
What you get
Everything in the bundle
- The Family Close workbook for Google Sheets. Your own copy. Paste your bank exports and it sorts the transactions, runs the close, the analysis, the forecast and the dashboard. Comes with eight months of sample data, so you can watch it work before you type anything.
- Up to 20 accounts in one file. Money moved between your own accounts doesn't count as spending.
- Monthly overview by category and month, against your plan and against last month.
- Step-by-step video tutorials, linked from inside the workbook: the whole close in three minutes, setup, pasting your export, fixing an unsorted row, the close and the bridge, and reading the ten questions.
- The Prompt Pack. Seven prompts that let AI do the sorting and the first draft of the commentary, while you keep the judgement.
- The Three Moves Bonus. The short guide to the thinking behind the method.
What it will never tell you
Where to look, never what to do
- It won't tell you to cancel anything.
- It won't tell you what to invest in.
- It won't tell you how to split your accounts as a couple.
It measures. It points to the four categories, the one plan line and the one bill that crept up. The decision stays at your kitchen table.
Built for real life, not perfect budgeting habits
Who it's for, and who it isn't
For you if
- you want to know where your money goes but don't want to track every expense
- you have several accounts or cards and want to see your spending together
- you share household costs with a partner and want one view of them
- you've given up on a budget before, and blamed yourself rather than the budget
- you want to understand your spending before deciding where to cut back
Not for you if
- money is in crisis right now. That needs different help than a spreadsheet
- you want to be told what to buy or invest in
You don't need to be good with spreadsheets or have a finance background. And you definitely don't need to become the person who records every €3 coffee. You just need your bank exports.
Who built it
A financial controller's routine, for your kitchen table.
I'm Dia. For about ten years I was a controller at a bank's head office, running the month-end close and the variance analysis for its subsidiary banks. Then I co-founded a startup.
In business, nobody makes decisions on a vague feeling about what's left in the account. We organise the numbers, look at what changed, and figure out what matters. At home, most of us get a banking app, a mental calculation and a little bit of hope.
The Family Close brings that controller thinking home, without making you do a controller's job. It runs on the export file your bank already gives you, and nothing connects to your bank account.
Questions
Before you buy
Does it connect to my bank?
No. You download last month's transactions from your banking app as a CSV or Excel file and paste them in. Nothing is linked, and no third party sees your data. It has been tested with exports from ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO and US-format banks, and it reads Dutch and English number and date formats.
How much time does it take?
About ten minutes to set up, once. After that, around twenty minutes a month.
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay once, and the file is yours. There's nothing to cancel.
Is this financial advice?
No. The Family Close is a spending analysis tool. It describes what happened to your money and what it implies; it doesn't recommend financial products or actions.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Email me within 14 days of buying and I'll refund you in full, no questions asked.
Do I need to know Google Sheets?
No. You paste in your export and the spreadsheet does the rest. The only thing you might need to do once is add a rule for a transaction it doesn't recognise.
Your money is already telling a story.
It's in the grocery runs, the subscriptions, the bills, the holidays and the everyday purchases you barely remember making. The question is whether you can see it.
